New Year, New Groove

by groove on January 7, 2014

Well, 2013 is over and we are already a week into 2014. We had a significant year of change last year with Daneen taking on a completely new and exciting path (more info below) and The Groove Garden becoming more prominent on-line through social media. The future looks very bright for us as our two main means of communication continues to expand to a wider audience. Our Facebook page continues to be the main source of our posts as Twitter (The_Groove_Gard) and Instagram (groovegardenrecords and groovegardenfood) feed through the page. The pace of updates and sharing of information is incredibly fast and we will be looking at ways to maintain a steady flow of cool stuff to see and know in balance with maintaining some sort of life. A very significant amount of our records are now listed on Discogs so Stacey will now have time to concentrate on more blog posts, Instagram updates, Twitter feeds and Facebook posts.

Most music-related blogs have a Top 10 of 2013 list. We have a much shorter list, the Top 5. Here they are:

5. Otis Redding – Lonely & Blue
(released late 2012, my copy dated 2013)

Otis Redding

4. Rush – Vapor Trails Remixed

Vapour Trails

3. Best Coast – Fade Away

Best Coast
2. Neko Case
The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight,
The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You

Neko Case

1. Pearl Jam – Lightning Bolt

Lightening Bolt

What??? No Arcade Fire, no Kurt Vile, no Vampire Weekend, no Waxahatchee, no My Bloody Valentine….
No, you see, we’re very disconnected from the “current” scene. We usually find out what’s cool months after the fact and we usually don’t agree with the current “best” bands out there. The most amazing thing about the current state of music is that there is so much coming at us all the time, it is impossible to keep up with everything. The other problem we find with current music is that there are very few albums that really strike the chord with us right away. Don’t get me wrong, today’s current artists are fine, just that there are very few that put an album together that makes me want to run out and buy now. The fact that there are two re-issues on the list says all there is to say. The list looks rather mainstream and we’re OK with that. One of our goals for 2014 is to be more in tune with what is current and new and maybe our list will be a bit more diverse next year.

Culinary Adventure …

Today was a big day for the Groove Garden Food. This morning came with nervousness, excitement and unfortunately not much sleep. As a lot of you know I enrolled in the Advanced Culinary program at Okanagan College this past year. What followed was a semester of business classes that started in September. These included Business Law, Accounting, Management Principles, Restaurant Cost Controls and Introduction to Wine. Much to my surprise I rocked it in all my classes. I worked and studied my ass off and it paid off. With those classes now behind me, today started with an intro to the culinary kitchen.

I will now spend this new year in the kitchen. I’m so excited about this new adventure and a wee bit scared. There is so much to learn ranging from basic cooking principles, to menu writing, creating stocks and cooking meat. As some of you are aware. I haven’t eaten meat in a few years so this will be a bit a challenge. No, I won’t be eating it but I will have to learn how to butcher, prepare and cook.

My goal is to document my journey in our blog. Everyday I will be learning new techniques and skills and what better way to capture this by writing about it.

Tomorrow I will be dressed in my chef uniform learning knife skills. Our chef instructor says we will be doing this by using flour to see how straight our cuts are – how smart is that?

I hope you follow us along in our next exciting journey!
